Week 8: Robby and Mat

The room: Guest suite

Cash spent: $33,374 (Budget: $30,000)

Score: 20.5/30 (fourth place)

“This does everything that I would want it to do,” said Darren Palmer. “I think this is a very big bang-for-your-buck, saleable, well-considered, consistent room that works well with the rest of the house.”

A soft palette of greens combined with a full-length original artwork helped Robby and Mat present a thoughtful design for their guest bedroom

Robby and Mat chose a calming palette of soft greens for their guest bedroom. The hero element of the room was a feature wall of soft abstract artwork painted directly onto the wall behind the bedhead. “How great is that?” said Shaynna Blaze as she got up close and personal with the artwork.

A grasscloth wallpaper in a muted tone added just the right amount of textural interest to the room’s entrance, offset by wardrobes in a dark timber.

“It’s a great bedroom,” agreed Marty Fox.

The ensuite bathroom, sadly unfinished, was impressive in its vision. The neutral palette (described by the boys as “brown/beige”) created an elegant appearance, offset by a single walnut vanity.

The tile choice was the standout, with grey/green long finger tiles throughout, including a tiled bench to mirror the other bathrooms in their house. Olive green grout added to the effect, making the tiles the hero.

“Their choices are beautiful,” said Shaynna, observing that had it been finished it would have been a contender for the top score.

Design tip

Tile grout doesn’t need to only ever be white – experiment with some different options. Lighter grout colours will make the tile pattern stand out, while matching the grout to the tile shade will create a more streamlined effect. You can even try a contrasting shade for a bold effect.

What colour paint did they use?

The paint colour that Mat and Robby used in their guest suite was ‘Tokyo Snow’ by British Paints.
