Sunsun's external filters are designed to ensure clarity of the water, safety of your fish and sterilization (models with UV light) of harmful bacteria and viruses all while operating silently in the background with as low as 30db of noise. Filter maintenance should be done according to the bio-load of your tank. Typically, a clean is needed when flow rate starts to be impacted. Rinse out the sponge and other media under dechlorinated tap water or tank water to ensure survival of beneficial bacteria. Also avoid washing the filter too frequently or with straight tap water as this can kill the colonies of beneficial bacteria keeping ammonia and nitrite under control.
