Media Release - Header - Bunnings welcomes Workplace Protection Orders for Tasmania

Attributable to Bunnings Managing Director, Mike Schneider

We welcome the Tasmanian Government’s announcement of Workplace Protection Orders, marking an important step towards providing stronger protections for retail workers and the customers they serve.

Everyone deserves to feel safe at work. No one should have to come to work and face abuse, threats or violence.

Like many other retailers, we’ve been seeing a concerning spike in violent behaviour in our stores, including a 50 per cent increase in physical assaults in our Tasmanian stores over the last two years.

Escalating retail crime is a safety crisis and behind the statistics are real people who are being put in harm's way.

The safety of our team and customers is our number one priority, and that’s why we’ve been calling for urgent action to protect retail workers, including the introduction of Workplace Protection Orders.

We welcome today’s announcement which reflects the seriousness of the safety challenges facing retail workers across the state and is an important step in providing stronger protections for our team and the customers they serve.

We look forward to contributing to the consultation process and continuing to work collaboratively with government, law enforcement, industry and unions to create safer workplaces for everyone.
