How to choose decking oil, paint or stain for your deck

Choosing the perfect finish for your deck becomes lot simpler when you understand the differences between what’s on offer. Feast Watson takes us through some of the best finishes to suit all design desires—whether it’s matte, glossy, natural or colour.

Keep it natural

If keeping the beautiful natural colours and grain of the timber is your preference, then look no further than a decking oil. A decking oil is designed to protect timber without dramatically changing look of timber. Decking oil is naturally pigmented so it will enhance the colour of timber slightly. You can even choose mild colours to accentuate the colour in timber species such as Merbau and Jarrah. If your deck is made from hardwood, we recommend using an oil as your best option. Feast Watson has a range of decking oils, including Feast Watson Traditional Timber Oil and Feast Watson Decking Oil which also comes in two options; a matte look and wet look. Choose between a lower sheen natural timber look or a glossy, freshly “wet” look to obtain your perfect finish.

Adding colour

Adding colour

If you love bolder colours and really want to introduce some personal flair to your outdoor area, then try experimenting with decking stains. Decking stains have higher levels of pigment rather than decking oils, so they change the colour of timber. We highly recommend decking stains for treated pine, renewing the colour of grey weathered timber and for coordinating timber with house and landscape design. For a deck and exterior stain that’ll not hide the natural character of the timber, those perfectly imperfect knots and timber grain, try the semi-transparent Feast Watson Timber & Deck Stain in a range of colours from black Japan to European oak.

Shades of grey

If you’re interested in what’s trending at the moment for decks, it’s all about the grey. We’re seeing a variety of grey trends ranging from charcoal grey stains to naturally weathered greys that are reminiscent of coastal architecture. While the latter offers a beautiful tactile finish, it does require extra maintenance to ensure the timber is protected. Feast Watson Timber & Deck Oil is a clear penetrating oil which allows exterior timber to naturally grey over time whilst repelling water. Water Repellent Timber & Deck Oil can be used for exterior cladding and weatherboards, decking, fences and gates, windows and doors and timber panelling. Regular maintenance is required to ensure your timber does not warp or splinter.
