Step-by-step guide to building a pergola: completed D.I.Y. modular pergola with outdoor seating area showcasing the finished structure

Overview

Want to build a pergola but not sure where to start? Our do it yourself pergola guide shows how modular pergola kits make it simple to create the perfect outdoor shade. This D.I.Y. project scaled to suit any outdoor area can be installed on various surfaces from decking to concrete, making it ideal for both homeowners and renters – with your landlord’s permission, of course.

Tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment, especially when working at heights.

Steps

1Building a pergola: Measuring and planning

When building a pergola, start by measuring the area. In our do it yourself pergola project, the patio was 3.9m x 3.4m and the finished pergola was 2m wide by 2m deep and 2.4m high. Mark four posts to 2m for the rails and cut to length using a circular saw.

2Installing your D.I.Y. modular pergola rails

For this stage of building a pergola, follow your modular pergola kit’s instructions, insert the rails into the corner brackets to form the top frame, predrill holes using a 3mm bit and secure the timber in the brackets with the supplied screws.

3Setting up the pergola frame

This step of your do it yourself pergola requires helpers. Working in the final location with helpers and floor protection, insert the uprights into the corner brackets on one side of the top frame and secure with screws. Attach the base brackets and secure with screws. Repeat for the other side.

4Securing your pergola

With your D.I.Y. modular pergola in its final position, secure the base brackets with anchoring hardware suited to your ground surface.

5Completing your modular pergola

Lash 10mm rope between two opposite top rails using a combination of hitch knots such as cow and taut line, to create a roof support. Use figure-of-eight knots to join two ropes. Position bamboo blinds with equal overhang at the ends, here 200mm. Attach to the support ropes with cable ties.

6Keep in mind…

  • When using power tools and when cutting treated pine, always wear the recommended safety gear (such as gloves, mask and eye and ear protection), follow the manufacturer’s instructions and work in well-ventilated areas.

  • Always use the right ladder for the job. Make sure it has non-slip feet and is set up on a flat, stable and solid surface. Wear sturdy footwear, maintain three points of contact (for example, both feet and one hand) on it at all times and make sure another person is nearby in case you need assistance

  • Before buying pergola materials, check your local authority’s regulations for gardening structures, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and use.

  • Take care when selecting your plants to decorate your pergola area, as some can be poisonous to children and pets, and check their suitability for your region, as some may be classified as weeds in certain states and territories.

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
