Set yourself up for camping and caravanning success with these eight expert tips. We’re sharing advice on camping set-up ideas that will make the outdoors feel like home.
Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.
Before setting up your campsite or caravan site, make sure you examine the area. Look for a flat space that doesn’t have any tree roots or large rocks, and consider things like wind direction and weather exposure.
Next, think about the flow of your set-up and how you can extend your space. A few ways to do this are by adding elements like awnings, rugs, picnic blankets, and outdoor chairs. These little touches create an inviting area to relax, read, chat and eat.
Lastly, choose designated spaces for food preparation, dining, showering, and any other specialised areas you may need, ensuring they’re convenient. This will get you set up for success from the start of your holiday.
Lighting is an absolute must when you go caravanning or camping. Make sure you have sufficient light to illuminate your cooking and cleaning areas, as well brighten up your overall space.
There are plenty of options when it comes to lighting, including powered, battery powered and solar lighting. Solar lights are great because they don’t need to be plugged into a direct power source. (These aren’t always easily accessible at camping sites, especially during busy periods.) Lanterns and string lights create a cosy ambiance, and portable lighting (like headlamps) always come in handy.
Investing in collapsible and versatile gear that’s easy to transport and minimises storage space makes it so much easier to set up and adjust your campsite or caravan site.
For your meal prep area, consider items like folding tables and stackable kitchenware to conserve valuable space. Foldable trestle tables work great for a pop-up cooking station and give you ample space for easy meal prep. Try adding collapsible essentials like baskets, cups, basins, and dish racks, too. These can be conveniently stowed away when not in use, and can serve various purposes, such as dishwashing, collecting water and small rounds of laundry. Storage tubs are perfect for pantry items and perishables during camping and are equally handy for transferring items between campsites.
Plan a comfortable space for everyone to enjoy their meals together. Having an adjustable trestle table is a great way to add versatility to your eating space. Use the lowest setting to create a relaxed look, adding outdoor cushions for each guest to sit on.
In terms of dining sets, opt for something durable and functional like enamel, which won’t chip and is easy to wash. Adding a tablecloth, flower vase and some citronella candles will add a little elegance, as well as keeping the bugs at bay!
Want to take outdoor lounging to the next level? There’s nothing more memorable than an outdoor cinema in the comfort of your own campsite. Set-up your projector and project your movie onto the side of the meal-prep tent. (Don’t forget that campfire popcorn, too.)
Whether you’re enjoying a movie or playing board games with the family, keep your area bug-free by using citronella candles, solar bug zappers and insect repellent. Add some blankets, cushions, and portable gas heaters with butane cylinders to make it cosy. (These offer a convenient and efficient solution to keep you warm during cooler evenings.)

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
