Overview

Give your tool storage a bespoke touch with a D.I.Y. hanging rack for lightweight items. To make this project even more budget-friendly, use leftover timber and paint, then add the magnetic tape strips. Too easy!

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Begin making your magnetic rack

Measure and mark timber at 600mm, draw a straight line across it using a try square, then clamp to workbench and cut the rail to length using a circular saw. Sand cut edge and wipe away dust.
A left hand holds a tape measure in place over a piece of timber while the other marks the timber with a pencil

2Prime and paint the rail

Working on a drop sheet, apply primer and two coats of paint to the rail front and edges using mini rollers, leaving to dry after each coat.
Left hand holds the timber rail in place while the other hand rolls white primer onto the top edge of the rail

3Add magnetic tape strips

Cut two strips of magnetic tape to 600mm using scissors. Mark two evenly spaced lines on the rail, remove tape backing and attach. Mount tool holder on pegboard (see ‘Hang it!’, below).
Left hand holds the timber rail painted green in place while the right hand secures magnetic tape

4How to hang your magnetic rack

This rack is designed to hold lightweight D.I.Y. accessories that contain ferromagnetic metals and is not suitable for heavy tools or fragile items. Check the strength rating of the magnetic tape before using. To hang on a pegboard, drill through the rack about 20mm from the ends with a 5mm bit, spaced to match the pegboard holes. Place rack in position, then thread black M5 x 35mm bolts through the holes and the pegboard.

5Keep in mind...

  • When painting and using power tools, always wear safety equipment (such as gloves, mask, and eye and ear protection) and ensure the work area is well ventilated. Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.
  • When wall mounting panels and a basketball hoop, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use fixings suitable for your wall type and the weight of the load.

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
