/Traditional pine Christmas trees have a charm of their own, but native Australian alternatives can transform your festive decor in true Aussie style. Check out these unique Christmas tree ideas this festive season. Learn about their characteristics and ideal growing conditions, then get set to enjoy these Australian alternatives outdoors or inside in a pot, draped in tinsel or enjoyed for their natural beauty.
Hailing from Western Australia, this hardy native has a compact habit and silvery-green, velvety foliage, offering a delightful festive feel. It grows into a sizeable shrub up to 5m tall but will be smaller if grown in a large outdoor container. Alternatively, the dwarf form, ‘Baby Woolly Bush’, reaches only 1.5m tall if you’re after something more compact.
Position in full sun with well-drained soil. They can be planted close together as an informal hedge.
This ancient Australian conifer develops a conical shape with pendulous branches and needlelike leaves, and makes a stunning and unique Christmas tree alternative. In the wild, Wollemi pines are at high risk of extinction, so trees have been propagated and sold worldwide – allowing you to own a special piece of history! It may grow up to 10-20m tall in a garden, so ensure your backyard or outdoor space is suitable.
The Wollemi pine is ideal in a pot indoors or outdoors. It likes filtered light and protection from the afternoon summer sun.
The Norfolk Island pine resembles the classic, traditional Christmas tree with its evenly spaced branches and dark-green leaves. Native to Norfolk Island, it has also been planted across warmer areas of Australia, particularly on coastlines as it is tolerant of salt-laden winds. Develops into a large tree 35m tall, so keep it in a pot to control growth.
Place in a brightly lit spot and water regularly during the warmer months.
This native Australian shrub is much-loved for its compact habit and new crimson-bronze growth that matures glossy green. Fluffy white flowers appear in spring, followed by dainty pink berries in summer – the perfect Christmas decoration. Grows 4-6m tall but can be kept smaller with pruning.
Likes a sunny position with well drained soil. Its fruit is edible but sour – use it to make jams and sauces.
