Overview

If you’re looking to impress your guests and add a personal touch to your Christmas table decorations, these D.I.Y. shiny gift pails are easy to make, using simple materials including plastic plant pots, ribbon and metallic spray paint. We’ve filled them with colourful garden tools for kids and baubles, but they’re so versatile you can use them to hold whatever take-home treats you like – try festive sweets or pet treats for any four-legged Christmas guests!

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

How to make Christmas table decorations

Follow the instructions below to make your shiny gift buckets and full them with the gifts of your choice. You can make them ahead of time so they’re ready for the big day.

Steps

1Apply the primer

Thoroughly wash and dry a plastic grower’s pot. Working on a drop sheet in a well-ventilated area, apply a coat of spray primer to the inside and outside; leave to dry.

Tip: Use a cardboard box as a spray booth.

2Spray paint the pot

Apply metallic silver paint to the pot, holding the can about 300mm from the surface and spraying evenly in a side-to-side motion; leave to dry after each coat.

Tip: Applying several light coats gives better coverage than two heavy coats.

3Decorate with ribbon

Create a bow from scrap ribbon and attach to the pot rim using double-sided craft tape. Fill with kids’ garden tools.
