a display of Christmas Coasters

Overview

Add a personal touch to your festive style with these D.I.Y. Christmas tile coasters. Recycle leftover wrapping paper to create personalised tile coasters, perfect for Christmas parties. We’ve planned to make six, but you can make as many or as few as you like.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Compile your supplies

Start by compiling everything you’ll need for this project.

2Measure and cut the wrapping paper to size

Measure the length and width of your tiles so you know the size of wrapping paper you need to cut. Mark the required size on the back of your wrapping paper, allowing for a margin so that you can wrap the paper around the edge of the tile – we’d suggest 5mm. Repeat until you have measured six pieces and cut to size.

3Coat the tile with Mod Podge

Using a sponge brush, coat each tile with Mod Podge (which is basically glue). Carefully place your wrapping paper cut-out in the centre of the tile and leave to dry. Once the first layer is dry, brush on another coat over the entire tile and leave to dry.

4Spray the tiles with acrylic paint

Once the second layer has dried, spray each tile with acrylic clear to ensure they are sealed and water-resistant. This adds a layer of support just in case there’s a spillage or two. Leave to dry.

Tip: When using spray paint, always work in a well-ventilated area with a drop cloth to protect the surrounding area. Wear a mask and disposable gloves and avoid spraying on a windy day.

5Add felt squares to bottom of the tiles

To cover up the rough surface on the bottom of the tiles, glue felt squares to the underside. Once the glue has dried, you’ll have six festive coasters to use this Christmas.

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
