An installed laundry tub

Overview

Installing a new trough in your laundry is an easy project that only needs a few tools. We'll show you some handy tips to centre the trough, cut the benchtop and secure your new tub.

Steps

1Mark the centre of your benchtop

Use your tape measure to find the centre of the cupboards you want to put the sink over. Mark this spot on your benchtop with a pencil, this is where you want the centre of the laundry sink to be. Now draw a straight line from this mark to the back of the benchtop.

2Mark an outline of the sink with your template

Centre the sink template on the benchtop, in line with the pencil mark you've drawn from the front of the bench to the back. Once the template is centred, move it back towards the wall a little, so that the trough won't obstruct the cupboard doors. Check the template is straight and leaves enough room for taps to be installed against the wall. Now draw around the template with your pencil.

3Cut the template outline into your benchtop

Put on your safety glasses, dust mask and ear muffs. Start by drilling a large pilot hole in the benchtop on the template outline. Use this point to start cutting out the bench with your jigsaw. In the back corner, where the curve of the template is close to the wall, use the hole saw to drill a hole, this will help the jigsaw to cut more easily around the corner. Use the jigsaw to then cut around the template.

4Attach the brackets to the sink

Before putting the sink into place, attach the eight brackets into their locations under the lip of the trough. Different sinks have different brackets, so follow the instructions to make sure they are attached correctly and keep your trough in place.

5Insert the trough and tighten the brackets

Insert the laundry trough into the hole in the benchtop, make sure it is sitting straight. With a screwdriver, tighten the brackets so that the trough is secured underneath the benchtop. Repeat this step until all of the brackets are tight and the trough is secure.

These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
