/Style up a spot to relax with this clever storage and screening bench. This nook is designed to maximise compact areas like a deck or balcony, but also works for a courtyard or patio. Slatted screen panels are triply useful – defining the zone, creating privacy and offering display – while a storage box doubles as seating. Add plants and it’s a garden getaway.
Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.
Measure the area to determine the height and width of the screening needed – we used two 1750mm x 900mm panels.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to assemble the screen panels. Lay panels together on a level surface and secure cable ties every few slats where the panels join, trimming cable ties with pliers. Secure the joined panels in position with the recommended posts (if required), fixing brackets and screws.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to assemble the storage box. Position the box in front of the screen and add bench cushions as a back and seat pad.
Fill balcony planters with potting mix and plants, water in, then hang from the top slat. Add S hooks to hang gardening equipment or decor pieces.
Balcony planters are designed to go over railings but work well on slatted screens too. Look for lightweight plastic styles and use them for annual colour or herbs, just choose plants that are happy with lots of sun if your nook is out in the open. Hang the planters from the top of the screen but make sure there is enough clearance for your head when you stand up from the bench, and lift them down for watering.
Team your storage bench with a folding table and chairs, so you can pack them away inside the bench to save space when not in use. Outdoor cushions and bench seat pads can be tucked into the box too. The weatherproof box protects the items from the elements.
Check out this step-by-step guide for attaching screens to posts.
Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
