Indulge, relax and embrace your healthiest self by creating your own private wellness zone at home. Consider any or all of these clever (yet cost-effective) touches that will help your home feel like an indulgent spa, but without the travel time.
You could create a wellness zone inside your house, or even build your own yoga/health/sauna space in your backyard. The choice is yours!
Whether you want the whole spa experience, or just some luxurious touches to your living areas or outdoor spaces, these tips will inspire you and help you unwind at the end of the day.
If you want a calm and serene space, don’t be restricted to white paint, which can sometimes seem cold and unfriendly. Add a touch of serenity to your interiors with some of the latest soft greens (think Dulux’s Pale Sage or Taubmans’ Fountain Mist) and blues (Porter’s Soft Blue or Dulux Mr Frosty Quarter) – or even a lovely blush pink. Pastels create atmosphere and soften spaces, and are especially suitable for bedrooms and other retreat-worthy spaces.
A touch of greenery can add a sense of calmness to your indoor spaces (as well as oxygen). Whether you are looking to bring the outdoors in or add a few pots of colour, there are all types of indoor plants and flowers to choose from. The key to keeping indoor plants healthy is regular watering, occasional sunlight and a well-chosen container. This article, ‘Discover 13 plants that are best for indoors’ has some great tips on the best plants to choose.
Cover all senses by adding a diffuser or fragrant candle to your chosen wellness zone. Diffusers work by heating and distributing essential oils into the air, releasing fragrances that not only smell beautiful, but can provide calming, healing, and protective health benefits as well. Candles are another option and can add a decorative touch at the same time.
There is no need to venture to a gym or local yoga studio to do your best downward dogs and planks. It’s not hard to create a dedicated space for yoga, Pilates or a few warm-up stretches. Just make sure you have plenty of free floor space and set up the key accessories within reach, such as a yoga or fitness mat, bolsters, blocks or bands. A diffuser (see above) can help to create the right atmosphere too.
Books are the perfect way to escape from the stresses of everyday life – they allow you to disappear into their pages for light entertainment, education or a-ha moments. Affordable, practical and beautiful decorative objects, books can find a home in a special tucked-away space or custom-designed storage area so you can turn pages in peace.
Saunas offer relaxation and help relieve stress. They are also said to aid in recovery – so if you have an injury or are suffering from arthritis and stiffness, they are a great option. Regular sauna use is also known to support detoxification through sweating and enhancing skin health by opening pores and improving circulation. Most portable saunas are designed for the outdoors, so keep that in mind when selecting the right location.
Take a tip from elite athletes and consider adding an ice bath to your backyard or your shed. The use of ice baths to help with sore muscles and inflammation after exercise has been popular with athletes for many years, but even occasional gym users or weekend walkers can enjoy their refreshing benefits. As well as the muscular effects, some people feel ice baths also help to reduce stress, improve mental health, facilitate better sleep and even alleviate pain.
It’s not hard to create your own bespoke wellness zone, yoga studio or home gym by converting your shed (or building a new one). Brush up on your D.I.Y. skills and plan your escape (literally)!
Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.
When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
