Looking to refresh your living room without a full renovation? Renovators Steph and Gian show how it’s possible with smart, practical updates. In this guide, they share D.I.Y. living room ideas to improve layout, flow and functionality – from repositioning furniture and mounting your TV to adding storage, paint and styling touches. Discover how small, budget-friendly changes can transform your space into a more functional and inviting living area.

If your living room is feeling cluttered, cramped or just plain tired, you might be looking to give it a bit of a reset (or a complete overhaul).

Luckily, refreshing your living area doesn’t necessarily require a major renovation or even a massive budget. In fact, a few smart D.I.Y. updates can completely transform the look and feel of your space.

The best part? They won’t break the bank and can be knocked over in a weekend.

In this D.I.Y. makeover, renovators Steph and Gian show off some easy living room upgrades that make a big impact.

Living room layout ideas to improve flow

Steph and Gian kicked off their D.I.Y. living room makeover by rethinking the layout.

The existing layout felt a little awkward, with the TV sitting on a console in a position that wasn’t making the most of the room. Combined with the orientation of the couch, the room felt under-utilised and lacked a clear sense of flow.

Spacious living room with polished wooden floors, a light grey sectional sofa around a round white coffee table, a TV on a low timber unit, and a white fireplace with framed photos and a round mirror, complemented by indoor plants and natural light.

The biggest change happened when they moved the TV from the corner to the wall, mounting it with a full-motion bracket. They also reoriented the couch to better define the new living area. This easy shift created additional floor space and a much cleaner look, along with a more functional layout.

To enhance the new setup, Steph and Gian used a renter-friendly cable management cover to hide visible cables. The simple fix was quick to install and made the living area feel decidedly more polished, without needing to run cables through the wall.

Lastly, the duo made the most of dead wall space by installing floating shelves in the living room. Not only did these add height and interest, but they also provided somewhere to display books, plants and decorative pieces.

The big takeaway? You may not need a complete reno to reimagine your living area. It could simply require rearranging your furnishings and making a handful of smart updates to improve its functionality.

Paint: your best bet for a budget living room makeover

Wondering how to update your living room on a budget?

Paint is one of the quickest, easiest and most affordable ways to refresh a room – and you don’t need to be an expert to apply it. All your weekend paint project requires is a little preparation, the right tools and a free afternoon.

While repainting the entire living room can be effective, Steph and Gian chose to keep things simple with a few targeted updates.

They started with the fireplace – already a focal point in the room, but one that needed a lift to help it really stand out. The fireplace transformation involved repainting the surround with Dulux Haunted Forest, a deeper green hue that contrasted nicely with the existing white walls.

They also refreshed the skirting boards with a coat of paint. Previously, the skirting boards and walls were two different shades of white, which created a disjointed look. Using a uniform colour across both brightened up the room and created a more cohesive, considered space.

Stylish touches that don’t blow the budget

Styling choices can make a room feel more welcoming and lived-in, but you don’t need to spend a small fortune on them. Steph and Gian reused existing pieces, which can help save money, and sourced a handful of affordable new pieces from Bunnings and Bunnings Marketplace.

Inexpensive items like vases and decorative bowls add texture and personality. Layered lighting – which can include wall, floor and table lamps – provides warmth and depth. Live plants and soft furnishings like rugs, throws and cushions can help soften the space and breathe new energy into it.

Storage is an often-overlooked but incredibly hardworking addition to any living room. Steph and Gian finished off their makeover with living room storage solutions like floating shelves and flat-pack storage behind the couch. They showed how these practical additions can reduce clutter, better define the living area and maximise available space.

Small changes, big impact

If you’re looking to undertake a D.I.Y. living room makeover, remember you don’t have to rip everything out and start again.

As Steph and Gian’s makeover proved, small changes can have a big impact: improving layout, maximising wall space, refreshing with paint, using smart storage and finishing the whole thing off with some well-chosen styling.

In just one weekend, and with a few clever updates, you can take your living room from tired to totally transformed – without the hefty price tag.
