A well-maintained, healthy lawn is much easier to achieve with the right lawn mower. There's a lawn mower to suit any size yard, with a choice of petrol, electric and battery-operated models.
Petrol mowers are best for cutting larger lawns. They're generally more powerful and, with regular maintenance, can last for years.
Electric mowers are ideal for smaller lawns up to 50-square metres. They're easy to start and maintain, you just need to consider the proximity of available power points.
Battery powered mowers are a good option for smaller lawns, are easy to start, and come with a rechargeable battery.
Designed to cut the grass that grows in hard-to-reach areas, line trimmers are compact, lightweight and versatile tools mainly used to tidy up and create neat edges. Available in corded, battery or petrol models, there are also more powerful trimmers used to slash tall grass before mowing. Most line trimmers are easy to store away, either by hanging up from the roof or wall, with some featuring split or telescopic shafts to make it easier to pack away.
A far less physically demanding alternative to the garden rake or broom, blower vacs are designed to clear large amounts of debris such as leaves, dirt and sticks off footpaths and driveways. Especially handy in the autumn months, blowers are an ideal clean up tool with a choice of cordless, corded and heavy-duty petrol blowers available.
You can take all the hard work out of shaping and maintaining your garden with a decent hedge trimmer. Designed to do the job of manual shears, you can use it for trimming, cutting, pruning and maintaining a broad variety of hedges, trees, plants and shrubs around the garden. As with any cutting tool, it's important to work safely. Along with eye and ear protection, make sure you wear gloves and keep your fingers well clear of the blades. Another good safety tip for corded trimmers is to work with the cord over your shoulder. This will help to eliminate the risk of accidentally cutting through the cord.
Chainsaws are a great way to make easy work of all sorts of big gardening jobs. One of the quickest and most efficient cutting tools, electric or petrol chainsaws can be used to cut trees, branches and any other timber including firewood and garden sleepers. Before you use one for the first time, it's a good idea to do a training course on safety with chainsaws. It's also important to always wear the right safety gear, including eye and ear protection, chainsaw chaps and gloves.
Don't forget to wear the correct safety gear such as ear, eye and feet protection when working with power tools.
Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer.
