Full boar air compressor on workbench

Overview

Air compressors are versatile tools that are well-suited to a wide range of applications. They are capable of powering a variety of air tools that require low to high air volume, such as inflators, nail guns, sanders, and spray guns. They can also be used for tasks like powering paint sprayers, sandblasters, and even automotive repairs. With their portable and durable design, air compressors make it easy to tackle projects ranging from simple home repairs to more complex D.I.Y. endeavours.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glassesglovesear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Set up the compressor in a safe area

Before setting up the air compressor, make sure you choose a well-ventilated area with no dust, vapours, acids, explosives or flammable gases present. The work surface should be stable and dry; it's important to avoid damp or wet areas.

2Attach the support feet and wheels

Take the nut and washers out of a short bolt and insert it into the hole on the frame. Next, put the washer and spring washer back onto the bolt and tighten it using the nut.

To attach the wheels, insert the wheel bolt through the wheel and slide a washer onto the bolt. Insert the bolt through the hole in the wheel bracket and slide a washer, spring washer, and nut onto the end. Tighten the nut using a wrench to secure the wheel in place. Repeat the process for the other wheel.

3Secure the handle

To attach the handle, loosen the four bolts on the tank. Insert the handle into the horizontal tubes and push it in as far as possible. Secure the handle by tightening the bolts with a wrench.

4Attach the hose

Attach the hose to the portable air compressor by securing the male fitting to the end of the hose and connecting it to the female fitting. Keep in mind that the tool must be rated to operate at the same pressure as the compressor.

5Attach the tool to the compressor

Attach the tool to the hose. Depending on the type of tool you're using, you may need to use a specific type of coupling to ensure a secure connection.

6Adjust the pressure

Fire up that compressor and get to work! Keep an eye on the pressure gauge to ensure optimal performance.

7Release any excess pressure

You can release any excess pressure in the tank by using a blow gun or similar tool to discharge the pressurised air.

8Drain the compressor valve

To remove any accumulated moisture in the tank, simply open the drain valve located at the bottom of the tank.

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
