Try Endive as an interesting alternative to lettuce. An excellent crisp vegetable which will liven up salads, Endive is eaten green and the leaves are a little bitter, but blanched for a few days they develop a milder taste.
For best results sow in a well drained soil, or soil that has been enriched and broken up by the addition of organic matter.
