A makeup vanity table situated near an open wardrobe

Overview

If you don’t have the space for a dressing table but want a dedicated spot for applying skincare or doing hair and makeup, this scaled-down D.I.Y. makeup vanity table, with its curvy contours and slimline proportions, is the solution. There’s no electrical wiring or complicated carpentry involved – simply cut a round panel in two, join with glue, then screw in place using angle brackets. Stick up a mirror and battery-powered lights, and you’re good to glam – all for under $160*!

Tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Steps

1Cut timber for your D.I.Y. makeup vanity table

Draw a centreline on the round timber panel, then clamp to a workbench and cut in half using a circular saw. Sand cut edges.

2Join the tabletop panels

Using a caulking gun, run a generous bead of woodworking adhesive on one semicircular piece, position the second piece of your makeup table on top and clamp. Use a 3mm bit to predrill four evenly spaced holes 30mm in from the curved edge and one in the centre; secure with 30mm screws. Leave to set.

3Sand tabletop and plywood brackets

Sand the tabletop and the plywood angle brackets all over. Wipe away sanding dust with a lint-free cloth.

4Apply primer and paint

Working on a drop sheet, apply primer and two coats of paint to your makeup table top and brackets using a mini roller, leaving to dry after each coat.

5Attach to plasterboard wall or wardrobe door

To attach to a plasterboard wall, mark the height of the tabletop (800mm is standard), then use a stud finder to mark the stud centres on the wall (usually 450mm apart). Position brackets on the wall to mark the screw hole locations and predrill. Mark the underside of the tabletop (the side with the screws) for the brackets, predrill and secure with 30mm screws. Attach to the wall with 50mm screws, checking for level.

To attach to a wardrobe door, check it is wider than 600mm, and there is enough clearance for the tabletop inside when the door is closed and a vanity stool. Secure tabletop to the door in the same way as to a wall, but use three brackets evenly spaced and hollow wall anchors.

6Secure the mirror to wall or door

Mark the location of the makeup table mirror about 50mm above the tabletop and centred, then attach using mirror tape and adhesive, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

7Attach the vanity light

Use the suction caps to attach the vanity light in the centre of the top of the mirror.

8Keep in mind…

  • Before drilling into walls, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework, and turn off the power before working. If unsure, call a professional. Use shelf fixings appropriate for your wall type.
  • When drilling, using adhesives and painting, always wear safety equipment (ear and eye protection, gloves and mask) and ensure the room is well ventilated.
  • Keep all paint and chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

9Now your D.I.Y. vanity table is in action…

Why not create a nifty bag stand to impress your overnight guests.

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
