How to select the right shower head
From sleek handheld units to fixed heads with adjustable sprays, there's a wide range of shower heads to choose from, but which one is right for you, your bathroom and your budget?
Who's it for?
A good tip when selecting a shower head is to keep in mind who'll be using it the most. If it's for your main bathroom, you may want a luxurious shower head with multiple settings, whereas if it's for your kids or guests, a simpler unit may be more appropriate.
Choose from different spray patterns
When selecting a spray pattern, direction, range and the volume of water used per minute can all vary depending on the unit. For example, a strong concentrated spray is good for washing long hair or heavy duty cleaning. Apart from the normal full-body shower spray, other options include massaging jets, rain-like droplets or a combination of both.
Save water and money
You don't need to sacrifice luxury and pressure when trying to conserve water. All shower heads contain a Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) rating. This scale ranges from 0–6. The higher the rating, the more water-efficient the shower head. This means the shower head uses less water, which will save you money. For example, a standard shower head uses up to 25 litres per minute, whereas a WELS 3-star rated shower head uses as little as 7 litres per minute. All shower heads available at Bunnings are at least WELS 3-star rated.
Wall-mounted units
These come in various styles, from simple designs to more robust, feature-heavy models made from stainless steel and brass. Choose a shower head that has a variety of settings – this way you can benefit from a mist, massage and standard setting from the one unit.
Handheld shower heads
Removable from its mount, a handheld shower head can be a great choice if you like a little more control or need more reach in the shower. They are also ideal for washing kids, pets or anyone with limited mobility. A good idea is to choose a combination unit that includes a wall-mounting clip, allowing you to use it like a more traditional wall-mounted unit.
Rain shower heads
If you love the rainfall effect when showering at a day spa, rain shower heads have a gentler water flow than the traditional spray system. Positioned overhead, rather than on the wall, they can be suspended from a pendant rail or flush-mounted to the ceiling.
Aerating shower heads
Some shower heads are able to aerate, which means they mix more air with the water. This creates the sensation of greater water pressure, even though these shower heads use less water than conventional fittings.
