Project Overview

Learn how easy it is to install hangers and hooks in your shed to keep your garden tools neat and in easy reach. We’ll show you how to create a timber frame and fix it to the brickwork. You’ll also see how to organise the placement of your tools so you can fit more on the wall.

Continue to Step-by-step instructions.

Step by Step Instructions

1 Pre-measure and cut your timber
2 Make sure your timber is level
3 Attach your hangers
4 Position your tools on the frame
  • Step 1. Pre-measure and cut your timber

Measure and pre-cut the timber you need for the frame. Then pre-drill the first hole into one end of the timber and into the wall. Take a piece of ‘spaghetti’ or wall plug, and put through the hole in your timber and into your bricks. This will give the screw something to bite into. Press it in or use a hammer to tap it in gently if you need. If you have a little bit sticking out at the end just grab a knife or a chisel and knock it off.

  • Step 2. Make sure your timber is level

Now take your hammer drill and drill a hole through the timber and into the brick wall. Use your spirit level to make sure that your timber is straight. When lining up the timber you can always use your pencil to make a mark underneath when it’s level. Once you have it lined up, drill through the timber into the wall. Then pop another piece of spaghetti into it and use a 75mm chipboard screw to fix it to the wall.

  • Step 3. Attach your hangers

Once you've put your timber up choose the type of hangers and hooks you will use. If some of your hangers have a wider base than the timber frame, simply attach another piece of timber above or below.

  • Step 4. Position your tools on the frame

Plan out how you want to group your tools and mark the placement of hangers on the frame. Make sure your long handled implements are at the top, and your short handled ones are at the bottom. When placing hangers on the bottom, make sure they aren't exactly in line with the ones on the top. This way long handles can hang through the gaps and you'll be able to fit more of your tools on the wall.

When you’ve marked out spots for all your hangers, grab the hanger that you'd like to use and drill into the wood.
