Digitalis purpurea. A hardy biennial with tall stems dripping with pendant bells, each beautifully marked. Enchanting in early summer borders and wonderful for cottage gardens, they are loved by bees and other beneficial insects.
A native of Europe, foxglove is said to have been named from the Latin ‘digitus’ meaning finger, whilst its colloquial name is derived from ‘folk’s glove’.
