Gladioli are best planted once the frost risk for your area has subsided. You can stagger your display, by planting multiple batches. Gladioli bulbs able to be stored and planted up until February for late autumn blooms. Select a full sun or partly shaded position and prepare the soil to a depth of 20cm, ensuring it is light and friable. Plant the bulbs with the eyes, or shoots, pointing upwards, covering with no more than 5cm of soil and 10cm apart. If planting in pots, allow 4 bulbs per 20cm pot. Gladioli can be fed as the foliage starts to emerge, use a balanced liquid fertiliser for best results. After blooming the flower stem can be removed close to the bulb, allowing the foliage to die back naturally to assist in making next seasons flowers. Gladioli can be left in ground for many years not requiring yearly lifting.
