Turning your backyard into an outdoor room for living, dining and relaxing starts with choosing the right outdoor furniture. Find out how, with this peek at Bunnings’ exciting new range.

Outdoor transformation

There’s nothing better than a spot of Aussie outdoor living and a stylish selection of outdoor furniture can help to transform your home’s alfresco area into the perfect spot to enjoy the sun and entertain loved ones.

When choosing your outdoor furniture, start by assessing the size of your outdoor space and how you want to use it. Are you creating a dining setting on your deck for backyard barbecues, a comfy lounge space overlooking the garden, or a chill-out zone by the pool?

Once you know what sort of furniture you need and how much room you’ve got to play with, you can start looking at materials and alfresco design ideas that suit you. Here at Bunnings, we’ve refreshed our outdoor furniture range in line with current trends and have a look to suit every outdoor space, so that you can enjoy inspired outdoor living for years to come.

The beauty of teak outdoor furniture

Teak is a beautiful timber, which you can either seal to keep it looking new, or leave exposed to the elements so it weathers to a grey patina. “Teak gives a classic look that’s always on trend, but the new range at Bunnings is really something special,” says Bunnings buyer Nathan Monk. “These pieces use sustainably recycled teak for a more rustic look, with little imperfections that add character to the timber and make every piece one-of-a-kind.”

This classic outdoor furniture material has also had a refined makeover, inspired by trends in indoor design. The Home Bazar ‘Dali’ range is a great example, as it combines classic teak with natural rattan inserts – an on-trend addition that is suitable for any outside space protected from the rain and sun.

Outdoor furniture for small spaces

“With the trend towards apartment living and smaller block sizes, there’s a need for multifunctional furniture pieces that make the most of every centimetre of space,” says Nathan. The Marquee folding balcony table is an ingenious space-saver for balconies and similar small outdoor areas – it hooks over the railing and folds down out of the way when not in use.

For another outdoor transformation idea, the Mimosa ‘Italica’ balcony table is fantastic anywhere space is tight. It’s narrower than a standard table, so you can squeeze it into the smallest of outdoor spaces, and you can easily move around it, even when it's paired with chairs or stools.

A round outdoor table, like the Mimosa ‘Macedon’ dining table, is a stylish yet sociable choice, so you can have face-to-face conversations with everyone when entertaining. “It’s also great for making the most of smaller spaces, as it’s easy to fit in an extra chair or two when company calls,” says Nathan.

A modern outdoor wicker furniture update

Wicker furniture is a timeless favourite that works in almost any space outside and with any decor. Modern outdoor settings, like the new Mimosa ‘Savannah’ range, are made from weather-resistant resin wicker and UV-stabilised fabric, giving you classic charm and an always on-trend design that will go the distance.

“With the Savannah range of lounge furniture, we’ve updated the classic look of wicker with a more modern, streamlined shape,” says Nathan. While contemporary in shape, this range is still built for comfort, with a generous size and plump cushions that are made for lounging on summer afternoons.

The home of the classics

The Bunnings core range of tried-and-tested classics remains the same, with an emphasis on furniture that’s tough enough to survive the harsh Australian elements, like the Mimosa ‘Malibu’ range of lounge and dining furniture, which is made from FSC-certified eucalyptus hardwood.

“The Mimosa ‘Solaris’ range is another fan favourite and is our bestselling range,” says Nathan. “It’s made from rust-resistant aluminium and comes in charcoal or white, providing a wide range of lounge and dining options, which both look great in any space.”
