  • Step 1. Wrap tape around boxes

Choose your favourite coloured tape and wrap it around two biscuit boxes. If you can, keep the tape nice and straight. One of these boxes will be for the head and one for the neck.

  • Step 2. Make the nostrils

With your scissors, cut two semi-circles out of black foam card. Cut two smaller semi-circles out of white paper and stick them inside the black shapes with glue to create your nostrils.

  • Step 3. Glue nostrils to the head

Choose which taped box will be your horse head. With glue, stick the nostrils on the end of the box on both sides.

  • Step 4. Create your mane

Measure two pieces of black tape the length of the boxes and cut them with scissors. Stick them together so that the black is facing out on both sides.

  • Step 5. Style your mane

With your scissors, cut a fringe along one side of the mane. Make your cuts about 3cm apart and cut half way down the tape.

  • Step 6. Attach the mane

With the same coloured tape, stick down the mane along the middle of the box you have chosen as the neck.

  • Step 7. Make an additional fringe

We made another fringe for our horse’s head the same way that we made the mane. This time, cut two pieces of black tape that are the width of the box. Stick them together and cut a small fringe along the tape. Then use another piece of tape to stick it to the back piece of the neck at the top.

  • Step 8. Tape the boxes together

Using the same coloured tape that we wrapped the boxes in, stick the head and neck boxes together. We left about 3cm at the top for the horse ears.

  • Step 9. Cut out horse ears

Draw two ears on black foam about 10cm in length. Carefully cut them out with scissors.

  • Step 10. Attach horse ears

Glue the horse’s ears to both sides of the head where you left some extra room for them.

  • Step 11. Make the mouth

Draw a semi-circle on white paper with your pencil and cut it out with scissors. You can make the mouth about 7cm long. Then stick it to the front of the horse head with glue.

  • Step 12. Make the eyes

Flatten out two cupcake holders for the eyes. You can even give these a small trim with scissors if they are too big. Then cut two small circles out of white paper. Draw a black eye in the middle of each circle and stick the circles into the middle of the cupcake holders.

  • Step 13. Attach the eyes

Put some glue on the backs of the cupcake holders and stick them to each side of the horse head where you joined the boxes together. It should be looking like a horse now.

  • Step 14. Cut a hole in the neck

At the bottom of the horse neck, use the craft knife to cut a small X. This will be where the dowel goes in.

  • Step 15. Stick the dowel in

Feed the dowel through the X you’ve made and push it all the way up to the end of the box.

  • Step 16. Secure the dowel

Tape the dowel to the bottom of the box to secure it in place.

  • Step 17. Stick on horse reins

We cut some string about two metres long with scissors and stuck it to the front of the horse’s face near the mouth for the reins. Loop it around the pole so you can hold it and you’re done.
