Project Overview

Your kids will have heaps of fun with this piñata at their next party. You’ll also enjoy making it with them and we’ll show you how. We’ve made a pig piñata but you can make any animal you like. Continue to Step-by-step instructions.

Step by Step Instructions

1 Make the glue
2 Blow up balloon
3 Make snout
4 Make feet
5 Cut and glue strips onto balloon
6 Cut flap
7 Fill with candy
8 Tie on a hanger
9 Paint it
10 Cut strips of tissue paper
11 Draw on the face
12 Make ears
13 Make tail
14 Hang it up
  • Step 1. Make the glue

To make the glue, mix equal amounts of flour and water in a bowl. We’ve used one cup of each.

  • Step 2. Blow up balloon

Now blow up a balloon to the size you want your piñata to be, and tie it off.

  • Step 3. Make snout

To make the snout, cut a strip of cardboard and staple the ends together. Tape this over the balloon’s knot.

  • Step 4. Make feet

Cut off four paper seedling pots and tape them onto the balloon to make the feet.

  • Step 5. Cut and glue strips onto balloon

Use your scissors to cut the newspaper up into strips. Dip the strips of newspaper into the glue and stick them down over the balloon, snout and feet. Leave to dry and repeat the process a couple of times.
  • Step 6. Cut flap

Once the piñata is dry, use the knife to cut a flap in the top of the piñata. This will also pop the balloon.
  • Step 7. Fill with candy

Open up the flap and fill it with lots and lots of candy.
  • Step 8. Tie on a hanger

Loop a piece of string around the flap and tie it together to make the hanger. Then tape the flap down.
  • Step 9. Paint it

Now choose a paint colour and use your paint brush to paint the piñata all over.

  • Step 10. Cut strips of tissue paper

Use you scissors to cut strips of tissue paper. Then glue down layers of the tissue on the piñata for a fringe effect.
  • Step 11. Draw on the face

Draw the eyes on some card, cut them out and glue down just above the snout. Then take your marker pen and draw nostrils on the snout.

  • Step 12. Make ears

Draw up some ear shapes on your cardboard. Then trace around them on the foam card, a bit larger. Stick the card ears onto the foam ears a bit lower and fold underneath. Use these tabs to stick the ears onto the head of your piñata.
  • Step 13. Make tail

For the tail, wrap a pipe cleaner around your finger to make it curly. Use your scissors or knife to poke a hole in the back of the piñata and stick the tail in.

  • Step 14. Hang it up

Now it’s time to hang the piñata from a hook. The idea is for the kids to take turns bashing it with a stick or thick piece of dowel, until the candy falls out. Traditionally the kids wear a blindfold when it’s their turn but it’s still heaps of fun without it.
