Project Overview

Summers on its way and that means it’s time to get outside and play. What better way to do that than catching insects and bugs. In this video Declan is going to show you how to make your very own butterfly net.

Continue to Step-by-step instructions.

Step by Step Instructions

1 Making the handle
2 Creating the head of the net
3 Making the loop
4 Attaching the net head to the handle
5 Adding the netting
  • Step 1. Making the handle

The first step is to make the handle for your net. This needs to be nice and long so you can catch the flying insects. Get an adult to help you cut some dowel to about 50-60cm. Choose your favourite colour and paint the handle nice and bright.

  • Step 2. Creating the head of the net

This step is to measure out the size of the net. Place your netting bag on a flat surface, grab your wire, and make a circle over the top of the net. Make sure you have about 2cm either side of the wire. When you have the right sized circle, pull off two more circles of wire and cut off the length.

  • Step 3. Making the loop

Now that you have the right length, make a loop of wire and twist the end of the wire around so the circle holds its shape. Don’t worry if your circle isn’t that round, you can bend it to shape later.

  • Step 4. Attaching the net head to the handle

Using the loose end of the wire, hold the circle at the top of the handle and twist the wire around the top of the handle. Once you have wound all the wire around the handle you can trim off the sharp end. We have also added some thick tape to our head to help hold the wire down.

  • Step 5. Adding the netting

Grab your netting and feed the open end of the bag through the wire circle and fold about 2cm of the bag over the edge of the wire. Using a small amount of craft clue, gently paint the glue over the folded netting so the two pieces stick together. This will make sure your net won’t fall off.

And there we have it, you’ll be outside in no time catching all the beautiful bugs and insects with your brand new butterfly net!

Please make sure you use all equipment appropriately and safely when following the advice in these D.I.Y. videos. You need to be familiar with how to use equipment safely and follow the instructions which came with the equipment. If you are unsure, you may feel it is safest to consult an expert, such as the manufacturer or an expert Bunnings team member.
