When it comes to decorating your home, the vision can sometimes not match the budget. However, this D.I.Y. light art project is a great alternative to expensive neon wall art and best of all, is super easy to do.
To create a gallery-like feel in your home all you need is a mesh panel, some spray paint, multi-coloured LED rope lights and a little creativity. You can write a word or create a shape and hang it anywhere in your home, all for much less than a traditional installation would cost. However, this isn’t one to be rushed – a little patience and attention to detail at the beginning of the project will make all the difference at the end.
This D.I.Y. project is a great way to create something completely unique that can be hung in your living room, or used as a beautiful night light in a child’s room. It can also be customised to suit the aesthetic of your home, with specific colours highlighted.
We’ve used rope light for this project, but should you wish to create something more abstract, you can also use fairy lights or other decorations, like ribbon or string.
1. Spray your mesh
Drop a sheet on a table or floor to protect your surroundings. Place the mesh on the sheet and put on your safety glasses, rubber gloves and face mask. Spray the mesh until completely covered and then leave to dry.
2. Get creating!
It’s time to get creative! Once the mesh is dry, “draw” or “write” your word onto the mesh grid.
3. Secure it
If you need something to keep the rope light in place, use cable ties to secure. We’re writing “Joy”.
4. Position the artwork
Once you’ve created the artwork, it’s time to pop it in a spot where your friends and visitors can see. Make sure your chosen spot is near a power point.
