Project Overview

We’ll teach you how to install a fold down clothesline on a brick wall. You will see how to mount the frame on the wall and install the cross bars. We will also show you how to thread your line through the frame.
Continue to Step-by-step instructions.

Step by Step Instructions

1 Mark the drill holes on the wall for the fold down clothesline
2 Drill the holes in the wall for the fold down clothesline
3 Attach the arm brackets for the fold down clothesline to the wall
4 Attach the cross bar for the fold down clothesline
5 Thread the line through the fold down clothesline
  • Step 1. Mark the drill holes on the wall for the fold down clothesline

Position of your clothesline on the wall and mark its height. A standard height is about 1.7m, however you can adjust it suit you. Then place the first arm in position and mark your drill holes. Transfer those marks across for the other arm, making sure the two sets of holes are level with your spirit level. In this case, our instructions say the two arms should be 2.2m apart. We’re also mounting onto a brick wall, so each hole needs to go into brick instead of the mortar.
  • Step 2. Drill the holes in the wall for the fold down clothesline

Drill holes for your bolts. If you’re drilling into brick, use a hammer drill and a masonry bit. You only need to drill as deep as the length of your anchor bolts. So before you start drilling, make a depth indicator on your drill bit. To do this, measure the length of a bolt and cover the rest of your bit with masking tape.
  • Step 3. Attach the arm brackets for the fold down clothesline to the wall

Hold the first bracket up to your holes and gently knock the anchor bolts into place with your hammer. Now tighten both bolts with your socket wrench. Once the first bracket is firmly in place, move across the wall and repeat the process for the second one.
  • Step 4. Attach the cross bar for the fold down clothesline

Put plastic corners into the ends of the arms. Loosely bolt a metal corner bracket in the first hole of each arm. Then slot the cross bar over both corners and bolt it to the brackets. You can do this by hand at first, but tighten the nuts and bolts with your shifting spanner. Repeat the process if you have a double frame clothesline.
  • Step 5. Thread the line through the fold down clothesline

Run 30cm of line through the back hole of one arm. Then tie a knot on the outside of the frame as shown in the instruction manual. Thread the line back and forth through the holes, pulling it tight as you go. Tie a knot at the other end and cut off any spare line. Make sure you leave 100mm of spare line on the end. This will give you something to hold on to when you re-tension the line. Repeat the process, if you are installing a double frame.
