How to create 3D wall art with cushions

1. Position your mount

The first thing you need to do is position your sawtooth mount about a quarter of the way down your wooden plate (we’re using a wooden teapot stand – you can find these at any good craft supply store). Make sure your mount is in a central location (you can measure it if you like, but it’s not necessary). Take the tiny nails that come with the mount and hammer them in – don’t forget to watch those fingers!

2. Glue the other side

Flip your plate over and apply hot glue to its other side using your hot glue gun. A word of warning – glue dries fast, so be sure to work quickly. Also make sure your mount is at the top so when you’re getting ready to fix your cushion, you don’t accidentally hang it upside down!

3. Place your cushion on

This is the fun bit – pop your animal cushion on! We used an adorable lion’s head but there are stacks of options out there so get creative. Press down firmly and hold in place for a few seconds. If you feel you need more glue, just tack it under the outside of the plate, making sure it stays flush to the cushion.

4. Hammer in your hooks

While your cushion and plate dry, you can hang your hooks. Mark out where you want your cushion to go on the wall first with a pencil, then grab one of your hooks and hammer it into the wall.

5. Hang your art

And you’re ready to hang! Grab your cushion and place it onto the hook – and you’re done! How cute does that look? The kids will love it!

For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page. You can also use a simple test kit from Bunnings to indicate the presence of lead-based paint.
