A room with floor lamp, bed and timber panels on the wall.

Leave watching the footy Grand Finals to the fans and focus on the only action that matters – getting stuff done at your place.

Not into the footy? No worries – there are heaps of home and garden projects you can do instead of sitting in front of the TV. We've picked some winners for your kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom and outdoor entertainment area that are easy to do over a weekend and won't blow a whole season's budget.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Give your bedroom the wow factor

Put the time you’re saving by not watching the footy to good use and brush up on how to paint a room (we’ve got rookie players covered with a handy beginners guide, too).

Or, if you don’t need to redo the whole bedroom, why not create a feature wall  instead? You could paint a feature wall – a chalkboard wall makes a fun addition to kids rooms – use patterned wallpaper or plot some different moves altogether.

For an easy room upgrade, add extra texture and visual appeal with timber panels. That way you have the option of a trending natural wood look or using ready-to-paint wall panels to create your dream-team colour scheme.

Make over your pantry

When was the last time you organised your pantry? Now’s the perfect time to tackle this spring cleaning task, after a quick shop for kitchen storage solutions like baskets, shelf stackers and spice racks.

Round one is to get everything out of your pantry and wipe down the shelves. Go through what you have, grouping similar items together and sending off anything that’s past its best, like those ground spices you opened a year ago.

To achieve your #pantrygoals, decant goods into glass jars, reuseable storage bags or stackable containers (don’t forget to label them so you know what’s inside). Finally, perfect your tactics as you restock the pantry – place small items where they’re easy to spot and have the taller players make up the back line. Well done – you deserve a snack!

Upcycle wooden dining chairs

While hardcore footy fans fret over where to sit in the stands, the only seats you care about right now are the ones you can return to their former glory.

Learning how to upcycle wooden chairs is the perfect project if your idea of weekend sport is touring your neighbourhood for treasures left out for the council pick-up. If that falls short, pick up a bargain on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace.

Once you’ve sanded back the surface and plugged any gaps, all you need to do is give it two coats of your choice of outdoor paint. This process works for upcycling other pieces such as coffee tables, and if you only want to restore timber furniture, you can swap the paint for furniture oil. Prefer fabric chairs? Build a garden bed for growing herbs and plants

There are so many outdoor jobs that you could get on with while the footy’s on – you might choose to care for your lawn, flex your upcycling muscles on terracotta pots or deep clean outdoor pavers, concrete, tiles and decking ready for the next time you entertain outside.

But if you’re in the mood for D.I.Y., sidestep these and get yourself grounded in the knowledge of how to build a garden bed for growing edible plants and herbs.

Better still, go for a self-watering wicking bed and you won’t have to worry about underwatering your greens.

Refresh your bathroom tiles

In footy, there are some legendary rivalries, but that’s nothing compared with the enemy you have to deal with – grout. Make this the weekend when you emerge victorious after mastering how to clean grout and get it white again – even if it takes a few goes to get it right.

While you’re there, give your bathroom or laundry tiles a fresh coat of paint  – the steps are the same whether you want to paint bathroom tiles or floor tiles – and bathe in the glory of a job well done.

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
