Here’s how to throw the ultimate Grand Final watch party at home for you and your mates.

It’s no surprise that Aussies love a grand final, with millions tuning in to watch the game every year. And if you’re a fan of the AFL Grand Final or NRL Grand Final, here’s how to throw the ultimate watch party at home for you and your mates.

Safety tip: Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (safety glasses, gloves, ear muffs and a mask, for example) and always follow the instructions for the product or equipment.

Set the vibe

There’s nothing like a theme to get the party started – so decorate your home, make team jerseys or beanies compulsory and put on a game day playlist. Some of our faves: ‘Eye of the Tiger’ (Survivor), ‘We Will Rock You’ (Queen), ‘Holy Grail’ (Hunters and Collectors), ‘The Final Countdown’ (Europe), ‘He Got Game’ (Public Enemy) and ‘Seven Nation Army’ (White Stripes).

Stock the esky

No one likes a warm beverage on game day – so make sure you get plenty of ice before kick-off and place a selection of drinks in large ice bucket or coolers with stands in different areas around the party zone. Replenish drinks regularly and add a water dispenser and cups in a central place so everyone can stay hydrated, too.

Make screen time count

Sick of craning your neck to see the TV because everyone else nabbed the best spots on the couch? There’s an easy solution: mount the TV on the wall so you all get a great view. Or consider setting up an outdoor screen and projector, if possible – especially if you’re short on space inside and have a bigger outdoor area.

Best seat in the house

Your mates won’t mind missing the thrill and the roar of the MCG if you’ve got a decent viewing area and spacious, ample seating to choose from. If you’re outdoors, rig up an outdoor entertainment area complete with outdoor lounges, bean bags and bench seats with long outdoor cushions so everyone’s comfy.

Serve game day grub

Nothing screams Grand Final grub like mini meat pies, mini frankfurters and sausage rolls – and it’s super easy to fire up the oven and create a finger food grazing table for guests, complete with bowls of tomato sauce for easy dipping. Follow up with snags and burgers on the barbie, a pig on a spit or D.I.Y. pizzas that take just minutes in your pizza oven. For dessert, lamingtons or a TimTam platter will always be a winner.

Light it up

Good outdoor lights are a must when you’re hosting an AFL Grand Final or NRL Grand Final party – they create ambiance and ensure your guests aren’t stumbling around in the dark looking for the loo! If you don’t have a lot of lighting outdoors, consider rigging up some outdoor party lights to instantly transform the mood.

Keep the kids happy

If your Grand Final party is a family affair, you’ll want to make sure there’s enough backyard fun for all the kids, too. Fill a paddling pool if the weather’s warm or get an inflatable jumping castle – and don’t forget to keep the snacks coming, too!

Health & Safety

Asbestos, lead-based paints and copper chromium arsenic (CCA) treated timber are health hazards you need to look out for when renovating older homes. These substances can easily be disturbed when renovating and exposure to them can cause a range of life-threatening diseases and conditions including cancer. For information on the dangers of asbestos, lead-based paint and CCA treated timber and tips for dealing with these materials contact your local council's Environmental Health Officer or visit our Health & Safety page.

When following our advice in our D.I.Y. videos, make sure you use all equipment, including PPE, safely by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the equipment is suitable for the task and that PPE fits properly. If you are unsure, hire an expert to do the job or talk to a Bunnings Team Member.
