Blueberries are mainly deciduous shrubs with oval leaves and white, bell shaped flowers forming in spring. Fruit is produced in summer and the leaves take on attractive red-orange tones in autumn. Berries are best left to ripen on the bush, and bird netting may be required. Once picked, they can be eaten fresh or frozen, made into jam, jelly or juice or used in cooking cakes, cheesecakes, tarts, muffins and various other sweet treats.
