Bunnings is committed to reducing waste and in conjunction with local councils and community groups, Bunnings is trialling several recycling initiatives nationally.
CFL Recycling
Bunnings is currently trialling Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) recycling in Western Australia and Victoria. Fluorescent globes contain a small amount of mercury and should not be disposed of in general rubbish. A complete, unbroken light is required for the recycling process as broken fluorescent globes may contaminate other recyclables.
Battery Back
Bunnings is currently participating in the Batteryback program in three Victorian stores. Batteryback is a battery recycling program in conjunction with ABRI and Sustainability Victoria. Batteries contain heavy metals and when disposed of incorrectly can leak into the ground.
Bunnings recycling goal is to focus on how we can improve the way we reduce, reuse and recycle throughout our business and operations.
During 2009/10 our recycling rate increased to 60% in Australian stores, with over 8100 tonnes of cardboard and paper over 5000 tonnes of plastic recycled. Other recycling initiatives have included:
