Battery and CFL Recycling

Bunnings is committed to reducing waste and in conjunction with local councils and community groups, Bunnings is trialling several recycling initiatives nationally.

CFL Recycling

Bunnings is currently trialling Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) recycling in selected stores in Victoria. Fluorescent globes contain a small amount of mercury and should not be disposed of in general rubbish. A complete, unbroken light is required for the recycling process as broken fluorescent globes may contaminate other recyclables.

Battery Back

Bunnings is currently participating in the Batteryback program, a Victorian battery recycling program run by Sustainability Victoria. It is important to dispose of Batteries responsibly as they contain heavy metals and when disposed incorrectly can leak into the ground. Batteryback recycling bins are currently located at our Northland, Maribyrnong and Hawthorn Warehouses, with the program to expand to seven additional Victorian metro Warehouses in February 2013.

Bunnings and Sustainability

Bunnings' recycling goal is to focus on how we can improve the way we reduce, reuse and recycle throughout our business and operations.

During the 2011/12 financial year our recycling rate increased to 65% in Australian stores, which included recycling 17,861 tonnes of cardboard and paper.

We continue to work towards our 85% waste diversion target.

Other recycling initiatives include:

  • Ongoing work with suppliers to reduce packaging waste
  • Waste targets established for all stores
  • Reuse and recycling of cardboard in all stores
  • Use of web and e-newsletter to reduce paper waste
  • Product recycling trials – Batteryback and CFL recycling
