Preparing for the Cyclone Season

Cyclones are one of the most unpredictable and destructive of all natures forces and often result in thousands of dollars worth of damage to homes and property. This year residents are urged to prepare their homes before the cyclone season starts, thus reducing the likelihood of property damage and helping to ensure the safety of family members.

Emergency Kits

An emergency kit is essential for all  homes and should be kept in a safe place which is known and within reach of all family members.  A basic kit should consist of a:
  • portable radio
  • waterproof torch
  • spare batteries
  • masking tape
  • rope
  • candles
  • waterproof matches
  • first aid kit
Contents can vary depending on the area lived in and the conditions which residents are likely to encounter.

Tools and supplies such as a hammer, saw, nails, tape and timber can be invaluable for preparing your home before a cyclone, or
for performing emergency repairs after the event.

Cleaning products and items such as buckets, rubber gloves, a mop and broom are often overlooked, yet are essential for cleaning
up after cyclones and other disasters.

  Before It Hits

If you are home when a cyclone warning is issued, gather all necessary supplies and take measures to protect your home. It is suggested that windows be boarded up using timber and nails, or that they are taped with masking tape in the form of a large X.
If there is time put clothing, valuables and important papers in waterproof bags, lock up pets and fill water containers.

Use rope or ties to secure any loose items outside which may be blown about by high winds, creating havoc and possible injury, or carried away by accompanying floodwaters.

  After a Storm

Residents need to use caution when moving about the house after a cyclone as it may have sustained structural damage. It’s recommended that gas or electrical appliances be left off until they have been safety checked by an authority.

Home owners should carry out any minor repairs or cleaning that may be required but leave any serious repairs until they have contacted an emergency service official.
