  • Step 1. The difference between chemical and organic lawn care

There are two types of lawn care - chemical and organic. A chemical lawn builder gets instant growth and helps green up your lawn. Organic seaweed products are good for soil conditioning and fertilising.

  • Step 2. Soil conditioners

A soil conditioner or health tonic won’t help with the growth, but it encourages a great root system. Strong roots hold water better and help your plants to thrive during the hot months.
  • Step 3. Ground breaker for clay soils

A ground breaker is good for clay soils. It breaks down the soil and allows the water to get in. Mix it up in a watering can and apply to your lawn before you fertilise.

  • Step 4. Use a lawn spreader for chemical fertilisers

When using chemical fertilisers, use a lawn spreader so you get a nice even coverage. This will reduce the burn patches if the chemicals build up and stay on your lawn too long.

  • Step 5. Water in the fertiliser using tonic

If you are going to use chemical fertilisers take the time to water it in properly after. It’s a good idea to use a seaweed concentrate with your water. Just clip the bottle to the end of your hose and you’re ready to go.

Seaweed products are ideal for dry environments and help promote overall plant health. They help the lawn’s root structure develop and keep the moisture around the root source.

  • Step 6. Use a soil wetter in summer

Coming into summer it’s a good idea to use a soil wetter.  This will help hold the water around the root system in the hotter months.
  • Step 7. Fertilise twice a year

Fertilise your lawn twice a year - once in the autumn months to protect it in the winter and once in spring to help boost the growth and carry you through the summer months.

Please make sure you use all equipment appropriately and safely when following the advice in these D.I.Y. videos. You need to be familiar with how to use equipment safely and follow the instructions which came with the equipment. If you are unsure, you may feel it is safest to consult an expert, such as the manufacturer or an expert Bunnings team member.
